Suffrajitsu
Muse Collective Reading, March 2023
At the dawn of the twentieth century, as the campaign for women’s suffrage grew more extreme, Edith Garrud trained suffragettes in the art of jiu jitsu, creating a force of fighters who were lithe, ladylike, respectable, and absolutely dangerous.
Suffrajitsu is a poignant yet darkly funny blend of history, feminist theory, theater, and martial arts that asks what it truly means to claim ownership of your bodies. As Edith struggles to instruct her pupils in the fine art of defense, two young women wrestle (both metaphorically and literally) with their sexualities, their ideologies, and the difference between defense and attack in a world that fundamentally isn't built for your body to thrive.
